Yoga Nidra is so incredibly relaxing that you can quickly forget your stress and reduce psychological stress. But this Indian yoga technique can do much more than that. This article explains everything about Yoga Nidra.

It is called yogic sleep, or conscious sleep. Because with Yoga Nidra you slide into a deeply relaxing state between being awake and sleeping. Your body lies motionless in Savasana (relaxed position on your back), but your mind is awake.

The special thing about it is that it is much more than just lying down meditation: whoever practices Yoga Nidra can, fascinatingly enough, experience a combination of meditation, self-hypnosis, mental training and progressive muscle relaxation after just a few minutes. And this leads you to a new level of consciousness.

Yoga Nidra has a holistic harmonizing effect, i.e. on the physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. And regardless of whether you are a beginner, advanced, young, or old, this yoga technique can be performed by anyone.

Yoga Nidra has become more and more popular. Many practicing yogis indulge in a yoga nidra session on a regular basis and sleep and brain researchers are finding more and more evidence of its beneficial effects. 

The yogic sleep 

One of the most exciting studies that was carried out over six years in Copenhagen at Kennedy University in cooperation with the Scandinavian yoga and meditation school has proven flawlessly: Measurements of brain activity in the EEG showed that the test subjects were in a deep state during the entire Yoga Nidra relaxed state that we know as the fourth level of consciousness: the alpha state.

In yoga, the alpha state is particularly desirable because it is this magical state between sleeping and waking.  

However, this level of consciousness cannot be reached through simple dozing or real sleep, but at best through meditation – or yoga nidra, yogic sleep. 

What may seem paradoxical to those who have no experience of meditation is the fact that this state of consciousness can be achieved without any effort. While lying in Yoga Nidra, you are not trying to force the various things you are experiencing. You just listen to the instructions and clearly see what happens. Almost like a child listening to a fairy tale – it is active participation, but without effort.

Why the alpha state is so important and valuable: 

In the alpha state, we are particularly capable of learning and receiving, because we are relaxed and awake at the same time and thus come into contact with our subconscious.

So if you have new goals or plans, or want to reach a new level in your life, you can establish a strong contact with your subconscious through regular nidra practice and manifest your desires much faster. 

Because a real change in feeling and acting can only work if your subconscious is on board. The consciousness or your intellect alone will not be able to master true changes in your mind.

You need less sleep through Yoga Nidra 

Maybe this is a particularly exciting aspect for you, because for many people the day could have more hours. 

Through this deep relaxation, which we achieve in Yoga Nidra, deep-seated negative thought loops, blockages and old patterns can be cleansed and overwritten with positive. 

That is why a Nidra session is enormously regenerative and gives you new strength . This makes it easier to understand why it is often said that a 30-minute practice can replace up to four hours of sleep. Even if it is not a full four hours for you, pay attention to whether your need for sleep is reduced. To do this, however, you have to practice regularly and please do not abuse it to go through whole nights .

Practical course of a Yoga Nidra session:

If I have made you curious enough now, I want to show you how such a Yoga Nidra practice works. 

As already mentioned at the beginning, this yoga technique takes place exclusively while lying down and is based on seven, always constant levels. 

So while you are lying down, you listen to the voice of a teacher the whole time because a nidra practice is always led by a teacher. 

Letting yourself be guided by a voice and surrendering to it is a crucial aspect for your relaxation. This allows you to remain passive yourself and let yourself sink deep into your inner world. A purely mental repetition of the individual stages without vocal guidance would not have the effect of switching off completely.

Normally, a nidra practice for adults lasts around 30-45 minutes and is an ideal length to achieve the maximum relaxing effect. 

Yoga Nidra is also very suitable for children, but I only recommend a maximum duration of 30 minutes. This is because children naturally have shorter attention spans and find it difficult to lie still longer.
